Liberty Hall
Set at Liberty Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, the painting holds more than its architecture. On close examination, the spirits of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin appear within the composition, a reminder of the founding generation’s lasting influence. Turner’s research into the location, its light, and its period informs every element of the scene, and the painting asks the viewer to look past the surface and see history as something still present.
