Commissioning a painting

For more than fifty years, Kenneth R. Turner has taken commissions one painting at a time. His work has been placed in the White House, the Texas State Capitol, presidential libraries, and institutional collections, and nearly all of it came by referral.

Every commission begins with research and conversation about what the painting is for, whether a building, a sanctuary, an anniversary, or a person, and why it matters. From there, Turner studies historical records, portrait references, architectural details, and cultural context so the finished work is accurate down to the detail. Every figure in We the People is a specific person.

Turner does not consider a commission complete until the client is proud of it. That has meant decades of repeat commissions and referrals, often from collectors who came for one painting and returned for ten or more.

The painting takes as long as it takes.

God’s Pride and Joy
Private commission

Commissioned as a custom work, God’s Pride and Joy celebrates life, innocence, and divine creation through layered symbolism and meticulous realism. The composition shows Turner’s research-driven approach, with close attention to anatomy, environment, and narrative balance, and the depth, scale, and technical detail a client can expect in a fully bespoke piece.

Keepers of the Lamp. Oil on canvas.
Keepers of the Lamp
Private commission

Created as a commissioned work, Keepers of the Lamp comes from Turner’s long-standing interest in faith as both historical truth and lived experience.
