We the People, 2003

Painted in 2003, We the People is a visual record of American history: more than 400 individual portraits woven into the fabric of the American flag. Each face is a figure who shaped the nation’s moral, political, or cultural foundation, organized by era, not by ideology. A reproduction of the painting is in the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. For America’s 250th anniversary, the artist re-imagined the work to include modern historical figures, extending the narrative into the present day.
